A 3 Step Guide On How To Wear Wigs Properly
Wearing a wig might be a piece of work—so, we prepared a 3-step guide for you to follow and slay every look. Some think only a stylist can apply wigs properly, but it is also possible to apply your wig yourself.
Preparing the wig
If your wig is a straight style, you can use a hairbrush and gently brush the wig. If your wig is a curly or wavy style, you can use your fingers to fluff the wig.
Pre-application
If you have hair, start by securing it as close to the scalp as possible. If you don’t, you may skip this step. Remember, it is important to wash your scalp to make sure it’s clean—with or without hair, before applying the wig.
Short hair
If you have very short hair, it is a bit easier to hide it under the wig. Simply brush the hair away from your face and pin in place towards the back of your head. You can also put it into a bun at the base of your head. You can spray some hairspray to keep it in place. Take note: be careful to not get any hairspray on the wig.
Long hair
If you have long and thick hair, it may be hard to conceal. To avoid this, divide your hair into two separate pieces, part it in the middle of the scalp. Twist each piece tightly and cross behind your head, then clip to the top of your head. This will evenly spread the hair over your head and it won’t appear bulky.
Applying the wig
If your wig is new, you may want to test fit it first.
1. Apply wig adhesive—a wig glue or a wig tape around your hairline. If you’re using glue, wait for it to dry a bit until tacky.
If your wig fits well and has clips attached to it, you can skip the gluing or taping.
2. Gently put on your wig. Make sure the edges align with your hairline, and it’s placed securely and evenly on your head for a seamless look.
3. Part it, style it, and you’re ready to go!
